Can fire doors be cut down to size? 4/9/2003

Q: Can fire doors be cut down to size?

A: The simple answer is no! Any attempt to cut a standard size fire door to size to produce a special would invalidate the fire test evidence by altering the construction. The sides and bottom edge of fire doors may only be planed to fit by the small tolerances described in the fitting instructions supplied with affixed to the door. Typically 4mm from the sides and 6mm from the bottom. The top edge of the door must not be trimmed.

Q: What are the interior doors called that are cut in half horizontally so that the top and bottom can be opened seperately? Can I cut my own door in half to make one?

A: These types of doors are called "Dutch" doors. We wouldn't recommend just cutting any interior door in half. Most interior doors are not solid and you would expose the core. It's generally better to buy a door that was manufactured to be a dutch door.
